How to Choose the Right Vet for Your Pet

I'll be honest with you: I wish I could see every pet that needs care.
But I planted my roots in Texas and opened Gibson's Paws, Claws & Crawls in the Houston area, and that's where we pour everything we have. We serve hundreds of pets in the Spring and Humble community, from dogs and cats to exotics, and we take that responsibility seriously.
That said, not everyone who finds this post is local, and that's okay. If reading this helps you find a great vet wherever you are, then that matters to me. Because every pet deserves quality care, and every pet parent deserves a good experience too.
Here's what I'd tell any pet owner to look for when choosing a veterinary clinic.
A Team That Actually Listens

You should never feel rushed, dismissed, or talked down to during a vet visit. A good clinic takes time to answer your questions, explain what's happening, and walk you through your options in plain language. You know your pet better than anyone, and your concerns should
always be taken seriously.
Many of our pet families drive thirty minutes to an hour just to see us, and I think that says something. They know we treat every animal that comes through our door the way we'd want our own pets treated.
A Clean, Organized Environment
When you walk into a clinic, pay attention. Is the waiting room clean? Are the exam rooms sanitary? Is the staff attentive and organized? Cleanliness isn't just about appearances. It reflects the level of care happening behind closed doors too.
Animals carry a lot of germs, and a clean, well-organized clinic helps prevent outbreaks and protects the health of every pet and pet parent who walks through the door.
A Focus on Prevention, Not Just Problems
Strong veterinary practices are proactive. That means wellness exams, vaccines, parasite prevention, dental care, nutrition guidance, and routine screenings, not just responding when something goes wrong or when there's an emergency. The goal is to help your pet stay healthy long-term, not just treat issues as they come up.
At Gibson's, we offer a Thursday Wellness Special and a Spay & Neuter package to make preventative care more accessible and affordable.

Transparency Around Costs
Vet care is an investment, and you deserve transparency. A trustworthy clinic explains costs before you commit, walks you through your options, and helps you prioritize care without judgment. You should leave feeling informed, not pressured or caught off guard.
We believe every pet deserves high-quality care, and that finances shouldn't stand between them and the treatment they need. Accessibility and affordability are pillars of our clinic, which is why we offer flexible financing through Cherry, Scratch, and CareCredit, so you can focus on your pet's health without the financial stress.
And because we're a full-service animal hospital, you can often skip the referral and get specialty-level care at a fraction of the cost, right here at Gibson's.
Calm, Compassionate Care

Vet visits can be stressful for pets and people alike. The right clinic knows how to handle nervous animals and anxious owners with patience and care. Compassion matters just as much as clinical skill. If the energy feels rushed or dismissive when you walk in, trust that feeling.
We pride ourselves on providing compassionate care for paws, claws, and everything in between.
Clear Communication and Availability
When you need help, your vet shouldn't feel impossible to reach. Look for a clinic that communicates clearly about appointments, follow-ups, prescriptions, and what to do in an emergency. Bonus points if scheduling is easy and someone actually responds when you reach out.
Services That Match Your Pet’s Needs
Not every clinic offers the same scope of care. Some handle basic wellness only; some offer grooming; others provide diagnostics, surgery, dental procedures, imaging, exotic pet services, and nutrition support. Think about what your pet needs now and what they might need down the road.
Trust Your Gut
Sometimes you just know when a place feels right. You want somewhere your pet is treated with care, where you feel respected, and where the team is genuinely invested in your animal's wellbeing.
Because veterinary care isn't just about medicine. It's about trust, communication, and community.
If you're in the Houston, Spring, or Humble area, we'd love to be your pet's clinic. At Gibson's Paws, Claws & Crawls, we care for dogs, cats, aquatics, exotics, farm animals, and more, with the same warmth and honesty I'd want for my own animals.
